Sunlight is essential for life, but overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation is a major threat to skin health. The UV Index is a tool to help you plan outdoor activities safely.

UV Index Levels

  • 0-2 (Low): Minimal danger. Wear sunglasses on bright days.
  • 3-5 (Moderate): Moderate risk of harm. Wear sunscreen, a hat, and seek shade during midday.
  • 6-7 (High): High risk of harm. Unix Index Sunburn risk is significant. Protection against skin and eye damage is needed. Reduce time in the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
  • 8-10 (Very High): Very high risk. Unprotected skin can burn quickly. Minimize sun exposure.
  • 11+ (Extreme): Extreme risk. Take all precautions because unprotected skin can burn in minutes.

Beyond Sunburn

UV damage isn't just about painful sunburns. UVA rays penetrate deep into the skin, causing premature aging (wrinkles, sagging), while UVB rays are the primary cause of sunburn and skin cancer. Remember, UV rays can be strong even on cloudy days.

Protection Strategy

Sunscreen (SPF 30+) is vital, but physical protection is often better:
1. Wide-brimmed hats
2. UV-blocking sunglasses
3. Protective clothing
4. Seeking shade whenever possible
